Why Study with Me?

Over the past twenty-three years I have honed my teaching skills and gained valuable experience as a performer and educator. Here are some highlights of my qualifications:

  1. Performance Experience:  As a guitarist, I have performed in a variety of settings, from solo concerts to ensemble performances both in the United States and abroad.  I believe that my on-stage experience enhances my ability to mentor students, helping them prepare for successful live performances.
  • Teaching Excellence:  I have a proven track record of teaching guitar to students of all levels, from beginners to advanced. Under my guidance, the guitar studios at Georgia State University and Emory University in Atlanta have experienced significant growth. My teaching philosophy focuses on fostering a deep understanding of music theory, technique, and musicality, equipping students with the skills needed to excel in their musical journey.

I have actively contributed to the development of guitar curriculum at Georgia State University and Emory University. In addition to developing a Curriculum for beginning guitar students, I initiated the creation of, and designed the curriculum for, the Master of Music Performance in Classical Guitar at GSU. Along the way I have introduced innovative teaching methods and repertoire selections. I am dedicated to meeting students where they are in their musical development and giving them the tools they need to reach the next level.

Sample Student Performances:

Thayer Naples  – 2023 MM in Guitar Performance at GSU

Thayer came into the GSU Guitar Studio in the fall of 2019 as my Graduate assistant.  Previous to his time at GSU, he was a graduate of the Berklee College Music and an adept specialist in Chet Atkins style thumb picking. However, while he had a tremendous amount of musical development, he had very little experience playing classical guitar.  In the two years that Thayer studied with me, we both put in a lot of work to develop his classical guitar playing to a high level. Here are two selections from his solo MM Recital:

Thayer Naples – Las Abejas by Agustín Barrios

Thayer Naples – Capriccio Diabolico By Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco

Georgia State University Guitar Ensemble

Each Semester, the GSU Guitar Ensemble presents a concert. Here’s a highlight from Fall 2021 featuring my students Ricky Menendez, Thayer Naples (featured soloist), Albert Torres, Samuel Wilson
